Remodeling any small space is always tricky, especially if you’re remodeling a bathroom. In a bathroom, there are certain things that you need to have, and they are going to take up space. Small bathrooms tend to be guest bathrooms, and you don’t want your guests to feel cramped when they’re visiting your home. If you have a smaller home, all your bathrooms can be pretty small, and you want to create at least the feeling of an open, airy space.
If bathroom remodeling is part of your summer plans, here are some tips to help improve your small bathroom.
Make the room feel bigger.
You can make a room feel taller by tricking the eye. Blurring the line between the ceiling and the wall creates the illusion that the room is bigger than it really is. Using thin strips that match the ceiling instead of thick crown molding is a simple way to blend the wall and ceiling into each other. Matching floor tile to the wall will create a similar illusion of elongating the walls. Changing your lighting fixtures can also make your bathroom seem more spacious. Pendant lights draw the eye downwards, while recessed lights make you look up.
Keep it light and bright.
A well-lit space feels more open, so light colors within the same color family are the way to go rather than dark contrasting hues. Get as much natural light into the room as you can, or use bulbs that imitate daylight if there are no or very small windows. Well-placed, large mirrors will also reflect the light and brighten up the bathroom.
Use bright colors and large patterns.
Just because you want to open up your bathroom and keep it light and airy, that doesn’t mean there’s no room for bright colors. Accent tiles or bright towels and bathmats will infuse some cheer and character into your bathroom. If you like patterns, keep them big. Wide stripes and extra-large squares will trick your eyes and make the room seem larger.
